What Else is True? A Practice for Fall Equinox (and Beyond!)
I’m writing this from the west coast of Ireland, the only place in the world where I've seen as many rainbows as I have at home in New Mexico! I hope this week's equinox is offering you some space for rest and hope in this increasingly off-balance time.
I love teaching on the solstice and equinox holidays, and miss being in class with you all today. If I were there, I'd be sharing a practice that I'm finding extremely valuable lately for the feeling of possiblity and balance that it brings when I am feeling scared and unsettled.
This practice, given to us by the brilliant writer/organizer/attorney/podcast host Dean Spade, involves a simple, powerful question:
"What else is true?"
When I find myself looping back over the fear and anxiety that show up nearly every time I pick up my phone and see the news, I start to get really stuck. I start to feel like there's nowhere to run, nowhere that feels safe. I start to worry about everyone I love. And it gets really hard to do anything else.
When I can intervene with the question "what else is true?" I am reminded that my experience is always multi-faceted. That as much as I am scared, I am also brave. As much as I fear being alone, I am also held by community. And as much as the future feels terrifying, it is also as yet unwritten.
I highly recommend Dean's podcast, Love in a F*cked Up World; the episode focusing on the "What Else is True" practice can be found here.
While it is a scary and uncertain time, what is also true is that we have each other. I am so grateful for that, for all of you. I look forward to being back in class with you in October!
Much love and thanks for reading,
Erin
